As reported on knoxnews.com (YourNews: Roane State receives new microscope), the electronic version of the Knoxville News Sentinel, RJ Lee Group, Inc. donated a scanning electron microscope (SEM) valued at approximately $75,000 to the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge, TN. The microscope will be used by students in an industrial forensics course as part of a new certificate program in composite materials technology. Composite materials, such as carbon fiber, are used to create lightweight, durable and energy efficient products. Roane State is part of the National STEM Consortium, ten colleges receiving federal grants to develop certificate programs in STEM fields.
Roane State President, Dr. Gary Goff, thanked Dr. Richard Lee, CEO of RJ Lee Group noting, “With the scanning electron microscope, students can discover real-world applications for the information they learn in the classroom. This discovery process inspires interest in STEM fields, which is crucial for the area’s workforce. We greatly appreciate this generous gift and the opportunities it opens for our students.”
