(MONROEVILLE, Pa., April 2, 2012) Drew R. Van Orden, Senior Consulting Scientist at RJ Lee Group, Inc., an industrial forensic laboratory and consulting firm headquartered in Monroeville, PA, is co-author of an article on asbestos exposure accepted for publication in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. Mr. Van Orden’s article, entitled “Assessment of Potential Asbestos Exposures from Jet Engine Overhaul Work,” will be published in Volume 63, Issue 1 of the publication, which is the official journal of the International Society for Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. The article was co-authored by Dr. Steve Mlynarek of the University of Southern Florida and details a study assessing potential asbestos exposures to aircraft mechanics and other persons in proximity to those conducting the overhaul of a jet engine that included asbestos-containing components.
The study demonstrated that, during routine maintenance or engine overhaul, disturbing asbestos-containing components produced very few airborne fibers, and that virtually none of these aerosolized fibers were asbestos. The exposures to the individuals conducting the work were several orders of magnitude below OSHA exposure regulations. With this data, Mr. Van Orden and Dr. Mlynarek concluded that there was a lack of risk from airborne asbestos to both the health of persons conducting this work and to other persons in proximity to it.
Mr. Van Orden is a Registered Professional Engineer with over 20 years of experience developing asbestos analytical methods, analyzing asbestos-containing materials, and conducting studies to measure the potential asbestos release from asbestos-containing materials. While at RJ Lee Group, Mr. Van Orden has participated in a number of large national evaluations of ambient asbestos concentration studies, directed a study of earthquake effects on airborne asbestos concentrations, and participated in EPA investigations into airborne asbestos concentrations in public buildings. Mr. Van Orden has testified in state and federal courts in numerous asbestos cases and has published in peer-reviewed literature.
