The U.S. Air Force fleet team for jet engine propulsion systems was charged with improving the safety and operational use of jet engines. During that process, they were able to generate fleet data from engine sensors, maintenance systems and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) models from numerous airbases. However, they did not have the automated trending and diagnostic capability to consolidate these data into the intelligence needed for early alerts and detection of failures. With this intelligence, they would be able to forecast deviations, troubleshoot engine problems and ultimately prevent failures.
Intelligence Delivery Put to Use
RJ Lee Group’s first step was to integrate the data sources from various physical locations. This also entailed combining data sources from different security protocols, databases and networks. We used standard secure methods to automatically collect, store, distribute and analyze data enabling on-demand intelligence delivery. Our approach eliminated the time-consuming manual process and erased the geographic boundaries that were once obstacles for our client.
Having integrated the engineering, maintenance, and logistics domains, we eventually developed tools to serve as an early warning system. The system reports performance trending and fault isolation based on the engine’s signature characteristics, and makes available diagnostic troubleshooting methods. For instance, a sample report might provide an alert, based on performance data recorded by an on-board engine computer system, if a remote measurement exceeds the designated threshold.
Safety and Readiness
Our integrated solution tools provided the intelligence to reach safety goals for reducing propulsion-related Class A mishaps and overall engine readiness possible. These tools are now in use at several U.S. Air Force bases and are expected to be set up in airbases worldwide over the next several years.
