Website: http://www.mrs.org/fall2011/

Dates:        November 28 - December 2, 2011

Location:   Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA

RJ Lee Group Materials Scientist, Dr. Jacqueline Sturgeon, will present an invited talk in Symposium MM11 “Micro- and Nanoscale Processing of Biomedical Materials” entitled “Formation of calcium-deficient fluoridated apatite from b-tricalcium phosphate at physiologic temperature.” The study was done in collaboration with P.W. Brown of the Intercollege Materials Research Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University. The talk will be held in Room 206-H of the Hynes Convention Center at 9:30 A.M. on December 2, 2011.

Abstract

Human tooth enamel is primarily comprised of a fluoride substituted apatite with a calcium-to-phosphate ratio of less than 1.67, the ratio of a fully stoichiometric apatite. Thus, establishing the formation of a calcium-deficient fluoridated apatite (CDFAp) is of importance for understanding the behavior of enamel and potentially for caries remediation. This study investigated the synthesis of CDFAp by hydrolysis of b-tricalcium phosphate (b-TCP) in NH4F solutions with varying concentrations at physiologic temperature using reaction in water as a control.
