REGULATION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY - Where Innovation and Environmental, Health, and Safety Concerns Intersect
Time: 4:00 to 6:30 pm - RJ Lee Group
Website: http://thewritestuff.jonesday.com/ve/ZZY31t653159L87FZ67Q
The program is being presented at RJ Lee Group, Inc. as part of the Nanotechnology Innovation Executive Briefing Series and will examine two major points of interest dealing with nanotechnology: regulatory and environmental. Mary Beth Deemer of the law firm Jones Day will begin by discussing the existing and proposed regulation of products containing nanoscale materials, along with issues relevant to such regulation. Gary Casuccio of RJ Lee Group, will then discuss the state of the art with respect to sampling, analysis, and risk assessment, including evaluation of nanoparticles from a work exposure and environmental release perspective.

Gary Casuccio (RJ Lee Group) has more than 30
years of experience in the characterization of particulate matter
using electron microscopy techniques for environmental, industrial
hygiene, powder metals, pharmaceutical, and metallurgical
applications. He serves as an advisor and consultant to the
Environmental Protection Agency regarding individual particle
analysis. Gary has also been active in the development of
analytical methodologies based on microscopy techniques and served
as the group leader in the development of ASTM standards related to
the sampling and analysis protocols of single-crystal ceramic
whiskers. With respect to nanoparticles, Gary is working with
industry, several national laboratories, and government agencies
(DOE, EPA, NIST, and NIOSH) in the evaluation of nanoparticles from
an industrial hygiene and environmental perspective.
Mary Beth Deemer (Jones Day) has more than 25
years of experience defending clients in environmental disputes;
negotiating the environmental aspects of acquisitions,
dispositions, and financing transactions; and counseling clients
concerning environmental compliance issues. Her practice focuses on
high-profile civil and criminal environmental enforcement actions
and investigations. She speaks and writes frequently on
environmental issues and initiatives that may affect the
development of the Marcellus Shale natural-gas play, along with
sustainability, corporate disclosure, and shareholder activism in
the area of climate change, as well as the regulation of products
containing nanoscale materials. Mary Beth is a two-time BTI Client
Service All-Star.
