RJ Lee Group Expert Mr. Alfred Schwoeble Testifies on Gunshot Residue in Maryland Murder Trial
The Washington Post reported that Mr. Alfred "Skip" Schwoeble, Consulting Scientist for RJ Lee Group laboratory in Monroeville, Pa. and gunshot residue expert, testified about the results of gunshot residue testing that was conducted for the trial of former Army ranger Gary Smith. Mr. Smith is charged with the murder of his roommate Michael McQueen and is being retried after the Maryland Court of Appeals threw out a prior conviction. Mr. Schwoeble explained that gunshot residue comes from the primer that ignites gun powder, and that after a firearm is discharged, it leaves behind a "lot of particulate." Using a video, Mr. Schwoeble demonstrated the "plume" of material that is expelled when a .38 revolver is fired. He testified that by using scanning electron microscopy, he found gunshot residue in samples from both the defendant's and the victim's hands. He then explained that he found fewer particles on Mr. Smith's hands than he did the victim's, and that he could not determine who the shooter was. The trial continues in Montgomery County Circuit Court.

Dr. James Conca Co-Authors Editorial on Nuclear Waste Disposal in Tri-City Herald
In an editorial in the Tri-City Herald, a daily newspaper serving communities in southeast Washington State, Dr. James Conca, Director of RJ Lee Group’s Center for Laboratory Sciences in Pasco, WA, along with co-author Dr. Judith Wright, addresses issues regarding nuclear waste disposal. The authors discuss a bill produced by the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Committee that addresses one of the three recommendations made in January by the President’s Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future. The bill authorizes “the secretary of energy to site, construct and operate consolidated storage facilities to provide storage as needed for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.” The authors assert that the bill “breaks the nuclear logjam” by mandating speedy action by the Department of Energy to build such storage facilities by consensus. They argue that, “if administered correctly,” there should be no need for additional taxes or rate hikes to support the program. Dr. Conca and Dr. Wright conclude that “this is a states rights issue,” and that the states most affected must first reach consensus to move forward.

RJ Lee Group Expert Provides Gunshot Residue Analysis and Testimony in Jordan Brown Homicide Trial
On April 13, 2012, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette covered the trial of Jordan Brown, a juvenile charged with criminal homicide in the death of his father’s pregnant fiancée ( http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/local/region/jordan-brown-decision-expected-631177/). The victim suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. In charging Mr. Brown, who was 11 years old at the time of the crime, police needed to know if there was evidence of gunshot residue on his clothing. Ms. Elana Somple, an expert witness and Manager of the Forensic Science Department at RJ Lee Group laboratory in Monroeville, Pa., was contracted by Pennsylvania State Police investigators to determine if there was evidence of gunshot residue on clothing samples taken from the suspect. Her testimony at the trial was that some of the defendant’s clothing tested positive for gunshot residue, which indicated that the young man had fired a gun or was in proximity when one was fired. Mr. Brown, who is now 14 years old, was found delinquent, the juvenile court equivalent of a guilty verdict.

Hospital Employee Health Interviews Matt Zock on Monitoring Chemotherapy Drug Exposures
In the February 2012 issue of Hospital Employee Health, an industry journal focusing on effective administration of hospital employee health programs, RJ Lee Group Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Mr. Matt Zock, was interviewed about the risk of contamination from antineoplastic (chemotherapy) agents and other hazardous drugs in hospital pharmacies and oncology units. The journal article, “Surface Sampling Tests Your Safety,” notes that personal protective equipment and other protective processes are in place and being used effectively but environmental testing is a good way to monitor their effectiveness. RJ Lee Group, Inc. is mentioned as one of the leading U.S. providers of consulting services for assessing potential exposures. Mr. Zock attributes this distinction to his specialization in hazardous drug consulting and the support of RJ Lee Group and partner laboratory resources including development and instrumentation. When questioned about the frequency of finding such drugs on surfaces, Mr. Zock noted that it is not unusual to find contamination in these environments. Mr. Zock added that any level of exposure carries potential risk, and programs for the safe handling of these drugs should be carefully evaluated.

Police Union Displays 9/11 Uniform Tested by RJ Lee Group in Meeting with NY Mayor Bloomberg
The New York Times reported that on February 12, 2012 New York police union leaders took with them the uniform of Police Officer Alonzo Harris, a respondent in the World Trade Center rescue efforts, when they called upon Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Their intent was to request that the Mayor release police medical records for a study possibly linking cancer to 9/11 contaminants. Officer Harris’ uniform, covered in grit from the collapsed towers, had been sealed in a plastic bag and stored his closet since 9/11. Last year, Harris sent the uniform to RJ Lee Group industrial forensics laboratory in Monroeville, Pa. to analyze the particles clinging to the uniform. The uniform was inspected without charge and Dr. Richard J. Lee, CEO of the company reported, “After examining the uniform, we found evidence that Officer Harris had been exposed to heavy metals, dioxins, and PCBs.” Current legislation, enacted last year, provides help for respiratory ailments to those affected by the terrorist attack, but cancer is not on the list of illnesses covered. Union spokesman, Al O’Leary said that 65 officers who worked at ground zero had died of cancer, and that 300 more had received a cancer diagnosis. A panel of medical experts at Mount Sinai Medical Center was expected to recommend to federal officials whether or not the act should be expanded to cover cancer treatment.

RJ Lee Group Analysis of 9/11 Police Uniform Spurs Demand for Release of Medical Data
In a press release issued on February 12, the New York City Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) demanded that the City of New York immediately release World Trade Center (WTC) cancer data. Officer Alonzo Harris, who worked for 700 hours during the rescue, recovery, and cleanup of the WTC, had sent the uniform he wore on 9/11 and sealed in plastic on that date, to RJ Lee Group, an industrial forensics laboratory in Monroeville, Pa., for analysis of the dust clinging to it. The uniform was found to be covered with dangerous carcinogens and toxins. Dr. Richard J. Lee, company CEO, said: “The chemicals found in the WTC Dust can each, at sufficient exposure levels, cause various harmful effects on the body, including direct irritation of tissues of the eyes, nasal passages and bronchial tubes in the lungs, and after absorption into the body, effects on the nervous system and kidneys, and various types of cancer.” PBA President Patrick J. Lynch called on the City to provide the rate of cancer occurrences among police officers so that the Federal government can have this critical information while it considers adding cancer to the list of illnesses covered in legislation enacted last year. State Senator Diane J. Savino said: “We are calling on the City of New York to allow Mt. Sinai Medical Center access to the list of police officers who worked at Ground Zero the days and months after the attack. These data could help those members of New York’s Finest finally get the help they need from the Federal government.” PBA president Patrick J. Lynch extended the gratitude of his 23,000 members to Assemblyman Micah Kellner and Senator Savino for drafting this important legislation and to Dr. Richard Lee, a nationally recognized forensics expert, for the support of RJ Lee Group.

Forbes Interviews Dr. James Conca on Report from Obama's Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future
In an article for Forbes online, staff reporter, Christopher Helman, interviewed Dr. James Conca, senior scientist with RJ Lee Group’s Hanford, Wash. facility on his thoughts on the January 26th Blue Ribbon Commission’s final report on what to do with America’s hundreds of thousands of tons of nuclear waste. Dr. Conca is a nuclear waste expert and worked for many years as a regulatory scientist on the Department of Energy’s Yucca Mountain Project, as well as the New Mexico’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and is intimately knowledgeable about the issues involved and the hurdles to be overcome in finding a lasting solution to our atomic legacy.
According to Dr. Conca, “We know where to put nuclear waste, how to put it there, how much it will cost, and how well it will work. And it’s all about the geology.” He noted that most of the problems stem from confusion on the part of the public and their elected officials, not from a lack of scientific knowledge. In summary, Dr. Conca concluded, “The recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission (BCR), and others that address energy and research, outline an optimistic path forward for an essential industry that will be a significant part of our energy mix well into the future. The BRC’s recommendations provide a path forward that everyone can accept where only strife and discord existed before. No new laws have to be written, just clarified.”

RJ Lee Group’s GSR Expert Gives Evidence at Bermuda Supreme Court Trial
Bermuda’s Royal Gazette Online reported that gunshot residue (GSR) was found on the clothes of a man accused of participating in a shooting of two people outside a Bermuda movie theater. RJ Lee Group GSR expert, Keena Zitkovich, testified that gun shot residue was found on a sweatshirt and jeans confiscated from Mr. Sanchay Grant who was arrested along with the alleged mastermind of the shooting. Police also recovered a pair of gloves and a jacket that showed positive for GSR particles. Ms. Zitkovich testified that GSR particles, comprised of lead, barium and antimony, melt together when a gun is fired and can land on the shooter as well as nearby people and objects. They can also be transferred between people and objects if they come in contact with each other. When asked by the prosecutor, Ms. Zitkovich noted that you would not expect to find particles related to the discharge of a firearm on the average person unless they had recently handled a firearm or used a firearm in their profession. She also agreed with the defense that the number of GSR particles found was low but not uncommon. The suspects continue to deny charges of attempted murder and gun possession and the case continues.

Dr. James Conca Tours WIPP Nuclear Storage Facility in "energyNOW!" Spotlight Segment
RJ Lee Group’s Dr. James Conca, a nuclear waste disposal expert, toured the world's only deep geologic nuclear repository, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant or WIPP, located in Carlsbad, NM as part of a team hosting the weekly TV news magazine “energyNOW!” Spotlight with correspondent Patrick Lee Sullivan. Dr. Conca explained that the facility, which just accepted its 10,000th shipment of nuclear waste, emits less radiation than you’d get with a dental x-ray. WIPP disposes of Transuranic (TRU) waste in salt caverns one-half mile underground. TRU waste is essentially bomb waste that includes the hats, boots, and tools used during the U.S. government's weapons program, plus more radioactive waste like cements and sludges left over from reprocessing weapons reactor fuel. Dr. Conca told correspondent Lee that this salt is the best place to store nuclear waste. “The walls and ceilings of these salt caverns actually close in at a rate of 3 inches every year, Dr. Conca explained, “These drums will stay here [for 200 million years]. The salt will come around and encapsulate them . . . like a big natural trash compactor.” With much debate on where to locate a permanent site for high-level nuclear waste, WIPP has been suggested as a possible solution with space for all of our nation's nuclear waste.
Dr. JAMES CONCA is a Senior Scientist with the RJLee Group in Richland, WA, in charge of nuclear development. Prior to coming to RJLG, he was Director of the NMSU Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center charged with the human health and environmental monitoring in the vicinity of WIPP. Conca came to NMSU from Los Alamos National Laboratory where he was Project Leader for Radionuclide Geochemistry for the Yucca Mountain Project. Before that, Conca was on the faculty at Washington State University Tri-Cities, and President of UFA Ventures, Inc. Conca obtained a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1985, a Masters in Planetary Science from CalTech in 1981, and a BS in Geology and Biochemistry from Brown University in 1979. Because of Dr. Conca's work on YMP and WIPP, and over 25 years in international high-level nuclear waste, DOE sometimes requests him to escort VIP tours through the WIPP facility.

Dr. Richard J. Lee Recounts RJ Lee Group's Involvement in WTC Aftermath
Dr. Richard J. Lee, CEO of RJ Lee Group, Inc., an industrial forensics laboratory headquartered in Monroeville, PA recounted in a recent Pittsburgh Tribune-Review interview the company’s involvement in the aftermath of the WTC collapse. The company was retained to determine the severity of the environmental hazard created by the collapse and over a period of three years collected more than 100,000 samples which are still in storage. Upon analyzing the samples, they noticed a recurring pattern they believed to be the World Trade Center (WTC) Dust Signature. Though the investigative work was officially completed more than seven years ago, there are still ties to the event. This past August, just before the 10th anniversary of the collapse, a former NYC police officer hand-delivered his uniform to the laboratory for analysis of the dust that covered it. He had worn the uniform, which he preserved in plastic the day of the attack, while at the scene and wanted to know if the dust could be responsible for health-related issues that he was experiencing. The article goes on to recount how the company evolved to the 300-person organization it is today and to describe many of RJ Lee Group’s capabilities as an industrial forensics laboratory.

RJ Lee Group CEO Remembers 9/11 Project as Massive Undertaking
The Pittsburgh Business Times interviewed Dr. Richard J. Lee, CEO of RJ Lee Group, Inc. industrial forensics laboratory that conducted environmental assessments of buildings at the site of the World Trade Center event. “When you looked at that cloud that morning, you didn’t really think of that as anything more than dust and smoke,” Dr. Lee said. “You really didn’t comprehend that it was asbestos and lead and dioxins, PCBs and arsenic and mercury.” In April 2002, the company, headquartered in Monroeville, PA, began work to evaluate the dust in a number of buildings in lower Manhattan including the Deutsch Bank building, a 42-story office tower damaged by falling debris. In a three-year period, they collected more than 100,000 samples of dust and identified a chemical signature that was later used in civil litigation and remediation programs of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This WTC dust signature helped building owners and local and federal government understand how to move forward in clearing and repairing the damage. Dr. Lee said the firm’s work in the aftermath of the attacks has had a major impact, both good and bad. He still sees traces of exhaustion from the project in his staff today.

RJ Lee Group Assists Former NYC Police Officer in Analysis of WTC Dust on Uniform
CBS Pittsburgh KDKA Local online news reported the analysis of a piece of 9/11 history. Officer Alonzo Harris, a former NYC police officer during the World Trade Center collapse, preserved his uniform covered with dust after the event. Ten years later, after suffering respiratory difficulties, he wanted to know if the WTC dust had played a role in his illness and took his sealed uniform to RJ Lee Group in Monroeville, PA for analysis. RJ Lee Group had done extensive dust analyses after the WTC event and had developed a signature for the dust whose pattern was easily recognizable microscopically. The laboratory found the WTC dust which contained asbestos, dioxins and lead on the uniform and though a recent study found that first responders have developed a higher than normal incidence of respiratory difficulties and cancer, studies are still inconclusive.

Interviewed on Growth as a Pittsburgh Impact Company
RJ Lee Group, Inc. (RJLG) was recently designated as a Pittsburgh Impact company - a company defined by its growth - by the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance. During a recent YouTube video interview by ImaginePgh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTcrgiRQoPs&feature=related , Mr. Alex Sciulli, President and COO of RJ Lee Group, Inc., was asked to discuss the company's growth over the last five years. RJ Lee Group, Inc. Recognized as a "Pittsburgh Impact" company by Pittsburgh Regional Alliance
In a June 2 article, “Pittsburgh Impact Companies Share Ideas,” the Pittsburgh Business Times listed RJ Lee Group, Inc. as one of two dozen organizations recognized by the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (PRA) as “Pittsburgh Impact” companies. According to the PRA, these are companies that have at least five employees, are engaged in almost every industry and every county, and have a record of growth over the past several years. They are, in effect, “recession proof.” But these impact companies also struggle with expansion, efficiency, facility and challenges that other companies don’t. To address these issues, the PRA launched the Pittsburgh Impact initiative to connect these high-growth companies with the public and private groups that can help them to continue to grow. Alex G. Sciulli, president/COO of RJ Lee Group commented on the initiative saying that he sees lots of value in Pittsburgh Impact, noting that one of the many positives is connecting companies that are going through the same issues of growth.

Bermuda's Royal Gazette Online Recounts RJ Lee Group GSR Expert's Testimony in Murder Trial
Keena Zitkovich, RJ Lee Group gunshot residue expert (GSR), gave evidence in the murder trial of David Cox in Bermuda as reported by Bermuda’s Royal Gazette Online (www.royalgazette.com). Ms Zitkovich explained that GSR consists of particles expelled from a gun when it is fired and the particles settle on people and objects near the gun. She indicated that two GSR particles were found on a baseball cap and nine particles on a latex glove noting that, “With the presence of two three-component particles, those particles were indeed from the discharge of a firearm.” But, in answer to questions from Mr Cox’s defense lawyer, Craig Attridge, she agreed that GSR can easily be transferred from one surface to another and it is impossible to tell when it was deposited onto an item. Mr Attridge suggested, “The GSR could have been transferred there from the very person collecting the evidence,” and Ms. Zitkovich agreed.

Bermuda Sun Highlights RJ Lee Group GSR Expert Testimony in Murder Trial
The online edition of the Bermuda Sun recounted the testimony of Ms. Allison Murtha, RJ Lee Group gunshot residue (GSR) expert, as she explained how she determined the distance between the shooter and victim in the ongoing Martin murder trial. After testing for the presence of lead on the victim’s jacket, Ms. Murtha noted, “We got such a positive result that we were able to put the muzzle of the firearm in the range of 3 feet from the target.”
Ms Murtha told the court that GSR is the combination of three elements — lead, antimony and barium. Particles found with two or three of the elements are described as consistent with GSR. When she tested the handlebars of the suspect’s motorcycle, she found two-component and single-component particles. “Whenever GSR is found”, she explained, “there are only three possible explanations — the person discharged a firearm, the person was in close proximity when a firearm was discharged or the person came into contact with an area that contained GSR.”
