A.J. 'Skip' Schwoeble, director of RJLG's Criminal Forensic
Department, has been invited to become a member of a Scientific
Working Group of Gunshot Residue (SWGGSR). This group developed out
of the FBI GSR Symposium in Quantico, Virginia, in June of 2005.
The FBI Symposium investigated many of the critical issues facing
the GSR discipline in the United States and internationally; and
identified numerous on-going problems facing GSR discipline, which
needed to be dealt with over the coming years.
SWG membership consists of 24 accepted leaders in the field chosen
for their activity in advancing the field. The Group aims to have
an international focus; and therefore, it is important that as many
of the major regions of the world are represented as
possible.
In order to address the critical issues and drive a continuing
program of development in this discipline, it is anticipated that
the SWG will for sub-committees which will work toward resolving
the critical areas, developing and publishing guidelines, and
focusing research and development in the field. These
sub-committees will specialize in such areas as ammunition,
contamination, instrumentation, methodology, training and
testimony.
The inaugural meeting is to be held in late October at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The SWGGSR is funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
