Pasco, Washington: RJLG Subcontractor to Fluor
Hanford Clean-up Project
RJLG is a subcontractor to work that Fluor Hanford is
performing in Hanford, WA. Fluor's recent goal was to finish
draining radioactive water from Hanford's leak-prone K East Basin
near the Columbia River. Draining began in early February, after
more than six years of work at the K East and K West basins to
remove 1,100 tons of eradicated nuclear fuel and 300 tons of debris
such as fuel racks and to consolidate more than 40 cubic yards of
highly radioactive sludge in underwater containers at the sturdier
K West Basin.
Work remains to treat this radioactive sludge, which has up to
300,000 curies of radioactivity. Fluor Hanford president, Con
Murphy has challenged Fluor personnel working on the project to
look at innovative ways to grout the sludge underwater. RJLG is
assisting in the development of grout mix designs and in the
development of the processes for the underwater grouting
operations.
