RJLG Completes Circle of Work at Ground Zero Location
RJ Lee Group (RJLG) became involved at Ground Zero, site of the
September 11, 2001 attacks, early in the area's rebuilding
phase. Today, as experts with sensitivity to the area's
history, RJLG is completing the circle of work as it partners with
a group of experts involved with the One World Trade Center
Project. RJ Lee Group's work began at 130 Liberty Street, in
2002. Building owners retained RJLG to assess the environmental
impact of structures damaged in the September 11th attacks.
Following the catastrophic event and the subsequent collapse of the
World Trade Center Towers, RJLG began to collect thousands of dust
samples from various systems throughout the buildings. The samples
were analyzed for potential contaminants including asbestos, heavy
metals, PCBs, PNAs and dioxins-furans.
The RJLG team spent over three years at 130 Liberty Street in the
arduous task of sample collection and monitoring. During this
period, RJLG utilized its information technology department to
build software that could be used during the sample collection
process. RJLG also partnered with architects,
engineers, toxicologists and medical professionals to conduct
remediation studies that would lead to remediation protocols
designed to ensure contamination-free conditions.
Today, reconstruction of Lower Manhattan's World Trade Center
site, with its signature office building One World Trade Center, is
one of the most high-profile reconstruction projects underway in
America. With its knowledge-base and history of work at
Ground Zero, RJLG was a strong candidate for laboratory services in
the building of the new trade center. When completed, RJLG
will have contributed its services to the 1,776-foot One World
Trade Center that features 2.6 million square feet of office space
on 69 floors.
To ensure the durability of One World Trade Center, a unique
concrete mix design was specified. iCrete, a technologically
advanced patented concrete system that offers record strength,
dramatic environmental benefits and cost efficiencies, was chose to
provide the right concrete structure. RJLG is partnering with
iCrete as the company's laboratory for the analysis of mix design
specifications. The iCrete product provides strengths up to
14,000 psi, which are the strongest levels ever poured in the
history of New York. Ultimately 215,000 cubic yards of
concrete will be utilized to erect the building.
With direction from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
and New York City-based Tishman Construction Company, Collavino
Construction is pouring iCrete at the below-grade portion of the
project, which will accommodate loading zones, mail rooms, cooling
tanks and most of the auxiliary services required for the
building. RJLG is glad to be a part of the process that
brings this area's traumatic history full circle to a monument of
American hope and pride.
