EPA Awards Contract to RJ Lee Group
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded RJ Lee Group, Inc. (RJLG) an 800K contract to develop an expert particle analysis system (EPAS). The EPA’s Human Exposure and Atmospheric Sciences Division (HEASD) will use the system for quantitative analysis of air particulate samples in support of air pollution research, source apportionment and human exposure programs. RJLG will develop the system on a high-resolution field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) coupled with a state-of-the-art energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS) and advanced software and analytical tools. The FEI-SEM will be used by the EPA to facilitate manual and computer-controlled SEM (CCSEM) data acquisition and data analysis of environmental samples. The EPAs system will provide size, shape, images and elemental composition for particles ranging in size from millimeters down to tens of nanometers. RJLG pioneered the use of CCSEM for a broad range of particle characterization applications and subsequently developed industry-specific applications for analysis of gunshot residue and for comprehensive inclusion analysis as part of process monitoring for steel production.
