Joseph Coiro is a Scientist II in the Criminal Forensics Department of RJ Lee Group. He has extensive expertise in the preparation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of gunshot residue (GSR) evidence using Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Joseph has been accepted as an expert witness in Georgia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, and has given testimony in state court for the prosecution in the area of GSR. He is a member of the Phi Sigma Lambda Forensic Fraternity, and his membership is pending for the Mid-Atlantic Association of Forensic Scientists (MAAFS) and the American Society of Trace Evidence Examiners (ASTEE).
In addition, Joseph’s past positions included working with police, hospitals, and investigators to coordinate and collect reports for the Accidental Deaths and Dismemberment Claims Department of Cigna Insurance. He also interned with the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office, observing crime scenes and death investigations, aiding in the collection of evidence while following strict chain-of-custody procedures for proper evidence handling, and interpreting and formulating reports. Joseph has produced and co-produced several presentations on trace evidence and fingerprint analysis. Currently, he is working on several research projects with the forensics team including organic and inorganic GSR, as well as on air dispersion of GSR.
