Gunshot Residue Workshop
RJLG announces the opening of registration for a Fall Gunshot Residue (GSR) Workshop. This intensive three and a half day workshop in November is geared towards laboratory analysts and crime scene investigators. This course will focus on giving a broader base of knowledge in GSR collection and analysis. It will also provide insight into the current impact of GSR on the forensic community.

Gunshot Residue Lecture
The Forensic Science Group is now offering a traveling Gunshot Lecture. This training has been specifically designed for law enforcement personnel, attorneys and other working professionals who want to broaden their knowledge in GSR, but don’t require the in-depth, hands-on training that our comprehensive workshop provides.

RJLG is steadily increasing the number of gunshot residue experts at the headquarters facility. Allison Murtha has qualified in court as an expert witness in two states, Delaware and Michigan. Sara Rafferty will be testifying in court soon. Dave Exline, Skip Schwoeble and Elana Foster are already qualified. In addition, Keith Wagner has also testified in federal court on behalf of the Forensic Department.
In society news, Elana Foster was named member at large to the Mid Atlantic Association of Forensic Scientists.
An upcoming trade show includes the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL) Forensic Seminar in October, 2008, where Skip Schwoeble has been invited to speak. Topics covered in the seminar include DNA, ballistics, forensic psychology and law relating to forensics and expert witness issues.
The recent revision to USP 797 was made official in June 2008 and includes new requirements for active air sampling, minimum air sample volumes, and microbial identification. RJLG’s environmental sampling services will ensure compliance with the “Environmental Viable Airborne Particle Testing Program” and “Surface Cleaning and Disinfection Sampling and Assessment” sections with regards to environmental microbial sampling.

Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is one of the most abundant components of the earth’s crust and can be found in a variety of applications, ranging from glass to concrete. Airborne particles of crystalline silica smaller than 10 micrometers are considered respirable and are potentially hazardous. The X-ray analysis division at RJLG handles crystalline silica analysis with two techniques: air silica/gravimetric filter analysis and bulk X-ray diffraction (XRD).

In keeping with its mission of bringing access to the physical sciences to students in the state of Washington, RJLG’s Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS) is hosting students form Central Washington State University. The students will be checking particle morphology of oxide insulators using CLS’ scanning electron microscope (SEM), an instrument that would otherwise be outside Central Washington’s ability to provide.
The SEM is a type of electron microscope capable of producing high-resolution images of a sample surface. Due to the manner in which the image is created, SEM images have a characteristic three-dimensional appearance and are useful for judging the surface structure of the sample. SEMs are patterned after Reflecting Light Microscopes and yield similar information.
For morphology the shape, size and arrangement of the particles making up the object are limited to just a few nanometers.
