The Waynesburg University criminal justice administration department and the office of admissions hosted a mock crime scene competition on March 29, 2008. The competition allows high school juniors and seniors with an interest in criminal justice and forensic science to experience real-world lab-type setting. The competition featured special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The agents talked about the different facets of their jobs, including how to access a fire scene.
RJLG's Alison Chasko is a forensic science graduate assistant and a technician in the university forensic lab. "In the past, students learned how to be a crime scene investigator," she said. "This year they learned how to be a forensic scientist and what opportunities are available in a lab-type setting."
Students had hands-on experience in the Waynesburg University forensic laboratory. They gathered information from documentation packets consisting of evidence, including phone records and autopsy reports. These details allowed them to piece together what they believed happened at the crime scene and presented their conclusions to the special agents.
