Waynesburg University dedicated the Murtha Center for Sustainable Economic Development on March 18, 2008, during a ceremony in the Center for Research and Economic Development building on the university's campus. U.S. Representative John P. Murtha, D-Johnstown, as recognized by the Waynesburg University president for his dedication to military service, his respect for the environment and his leadership related to the development of the Center for Research and Economic Development (CREED).
The CREED features a high-tech laboratory that is a joint effort of the university and RJ Lee Group, and provides university students with hands-on experience and state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation. Murtha is credited for securing $294,000 for the center.
The center is also engaged with the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Administration to define a national standard for Electronic Crime Prevention and Investigation (ECPI) and develop a prototype for training. Murtha secured $470,000 to continue development of the ECPI curriculum, in collaboration with the National Forensic Science and Technology Center. The curriculum will aid law enforcement agencies by establishing a standard national protocol to prosecute criminals who are using laptops, cell phones and digital cameras in criminal activity.
