On Thursday May 21, 2009, RJ Lee Group hosted 21 students from Perry Traditional Academy High School as part of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative (PTEI). Part of PTEI's mission is to provide educational opportunities to students who have a desire to enter into the field of scientific study and research. As part of this outreach, PTEI establishes partnerships with local scientific communities to create a connection between students and professionals. This connection is meant to foster interest in the sciences as well as generate ideas about possible career options for the students.
RJLG agreed to be a host organization to the students of Perry Academy, and created an engaging, hands-on forensic event for the students to experience. "RJLG provided the students from Perry an experience that I am sure they will not forget. I greatly appreciate the time that the employees at RJLG spent to put together an awesome morning. Thanks and I/Perry greatly appreciate the experience." says LaShon Jackson, Program Manager, Education & Workforce Development, PTEI.
Incorporating the client services, materials, forensics, and biomed/pharmaceutical divisions, RJ Lee Group staff pulled together to create a mock crime where students could investigate the evidence collected at the scene. The students were broken into small groups where they analyzed the evidence: blood and fibers found on a gun, gun shot residue left on clothing, and soil samples from the scene of the crime. The students were not only given the opportunity to work together to solve the crime, they were also given the chance to view and test high-end microscopy techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and polarized light microscopy (PLM).
