Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)
The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation is used primarily to determine the surface area from the physical adsorption of a gas on a solid surface.

brunaueremmett_250Gas molecules that stick to the surface of the solid (adsorbent) are said to be adsorbed and tend to form a thin layer that covers the entire adsorbent surface. According to the BET theory, one can estimate the number of molecules required to cover the adsorbent surface with a monolayer of adsorbed molecules. Multiplying this estimate by the cross-sectional area of an adsorbate molecule yields the sample's surface area. The Quantachrome Instruments NOVA 1000 provides rapid single sample surface area and pore size analysis. A BET surface area analysis is complete in minutes (in as little as eight minutes) and multiple pore size measurements in a few hours. Up to 200 data points (100 adsorption points and 100 desorption points) can be analyzed. This analysis is beneficial in the estimation of surface area, micro-pore size and volume in catalytic materials and pharmaceutical powders.
