Evaluation of Ultra-fine Particles as Part of a Health Effects Exposure Study
Ambient particulate matter (PM) is composed of a complex mixture of materials that includes bioactive and toxic compounds of natural and anthropogenic origin. However, much about the relationship between PM and health effects is still not understood. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated an experimental assessment on the health effects of exposure to ultra-fine (UF, nominal diameter < 0.2 micrometer) particles at their human exposure facility (HEF) located in Chapel Hill, NC:
- Healthy adults are exposed to the UF particles in a specially designed aerosol chamber.
- Real-time size distribution measurements are made using scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) instruments.
- Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are being employed to characterize UF particles.
