Some chemotherapy drugs are carcinogenic or cytotoxic at trace levels so occupational exposure is a concern. There is a lack of standard methods for the collection or analysis of hazardous or cytotoxic drug samples. RJ Lee Group (RJLG) assessed antineoplastic (chemotherapy drug) surface contamination in a major New York hospital pharmacy and associated nursing area. Selected drugs were detected in quantifiable levels on most surfaces within the pharmacy buffer and ante areas.
This is a "hot topic" in the field of hazardous drug exposures and studies are currently being conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and others. RJLG's Dr. Farrell Melnick, has recently been appointed to the NIOSH Hazardous Drug Committee by Dr. John Howard, Director of NIOSH.
