Predicting the Behavior of Cracked Concrete Exposed to Contamination

The difficulty in predicting the service life of concrete is compounded by the fact that many experts disagree about the impact cracks have on concrete degradation. RJ Lee Group (RJLG), through a Small Business Initiative Research (SBIR) grant, developed and validated the methods and tools to evaluate and quantify the impact of cracks on contaminant transport in concrete structures.  The resulting application utilizes petrographic analysis via chemistry and microscopy to conclusively evaluate the impact of cracks on the degradation of concrete. As a result, the presence of cracks can be incorporated into the prediction of concrete service life.
