Predicting the Service-life of Massive Concrete Structures Exposed to Cold Climates

Massive concrete structures exposed to severe winter environments may suffer from various types of premature degradation. Through Phase III of a Small Business Initiative Research (SBIR) grant, RJ Lee Group (RJLG) analyzed the predictability of the behavior of concrete structures exposed to numerous freezing and thawing cycles.  Our experts utilized forensic investigation of concrete and application of the previously developed SUMMA model to produce SUMMA-Cold Climate (SUMMA-CC) software.  SUMMA-CC can be used to simulate real exposure conditions in the laboratory to predict the residual service life of existing structures.  This creates opportunities to accurately forecast logistical repair and maintenance of concrete structures.
