RJLG Tests Artificial Turf for Lead

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is investigating whether synthetic fields contain a high concentration of lead. It’s raising fears that athletes could ingest dust or particles from the playing surface. This comes on the heels of recent prompting by New Jersey State officials who closed some synthetic sports fields after discovering high levels of lead. RJLG is now testing for lead in artificial turf. Our analysts can perform nondestructive screening on a six inch square of the synthetic grass.

Analysis:
  • Screening (Non-destructive)
  • Sample analysis for Total Lead
  • Availability Analysis (Surface Transferability)
  • Leaching Potential
Method:
  • Niton XRF
  • SW-846 6010 ICP with a 3051A Microwave digestion
  • Wipe samples via NIOSH 9100
  • STLC or TCLP
  • XRD
