RJ Lee Group (RJLG) recently made a presentation at a public meeting in Washington, D.C. concerning the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Draft Document Titled "Asbestos and Other Mineral Fibers: A Roadmap for Scientific Research." The purpose of the meeting was for NIOSH to obtain comments from scientists and representatives from government agencies, industry, labor, and other stakeholders regarding the NIOSH Roadmap, which proposes needed research related to asbestos definitions, analytical issues, and risk assessment. The emphasis of the proposed NIOSH research is on providing answers to current scientific questions, reducing scientific uncertainties, and providing a sound scientific foundation for future policy development. The RJLG presentation summarized the scientific literature developed over more than 30 years. In addition, recent research conducted at RJLG on the use of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) as a complementary tool to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for enhanced morphological characterization of asbestos particles was presented. A booklet comparing TEM images and three-dimensional FESEM stereo images of various asbestos and non-asbestos particles was distributed at the meeting.
