RJ Lee Group Exceeds 2010 Expectations with Sales Growth of 33% to Kick-Start 2011

RJ Lee Group News

January 17, 2011

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – January 17, 2011 – RJ Lee Group, Inc., experts in materials characterization and testing and scientific analysis announces a 33% increase in revenue growth for the past year.

“RJ Lee Group looks forward to a successful 2011 boosted by a 2010 revenue growth of 33% despite a slow pace of recovery in the general economy last year,” stated Dr. Richard J. Lee, Chief Executive Officer. “Solid growth in our core analytical laboratory businesses such as materials characterization and testing services enabled us to strengthen our position in the market and increase our revenue from our emerging businesses initiatives. Future growth prospects for 2011 and beyond are more promising than ever as we continue to execute our business strategy and deliver quantifiable return on investment for our expanding client base.”

“The unique advantage that we have,” according to Alex Sciulli, President and Chief Operating Officer, “is our people. Our staff’s scientific expertise and commitment to quality is largely responsible for our high level of customer satisfaction and growth in 2010. With this solid foundation, we are well positioned to expand our business in systems reliability services and laboratory information management to drive the next phase of growth. We are projecting high interest in 2011 for THEMIS-our Criminal Forensics Information System suite of software applications for managing crime labs and medical examiner data and property rooms. THEMIS has provided us with a foothold in the international marketplace and we expect to expand that presence in the coming year.”

To support the 2010 sales growth RJ Lee Group increased personnel by 17%. “Though new hires represented a cross-section of disciplines and skill levels,” remarked Stephanie Griffith, Human Resources Manager, “we also filled positions requiring high-level professional expertise such as hiring Dr. Paul Ioannidis as Director of Analytical Services and Dr. James L. Conca as Director of Laboratory Operations at the DOE Hanford Nuclear Site’s Waste Sampling and Characterization Facility (WSCF) where RJ Lee Group is a sub-contractor to Mission Support Alliance (MSA) and responsible for its management.”

Core Analytical Services Drive New Business Growth

“If early in our corporate history we had decided to concentrate solely on maintaining a presence in the analytical services marketplace, we wouldn’t have reached these new heights,” noted Casey Bunker, Director, Marketing and Business Development. “However, it’s our core analytical expertise that supports and is often responsible for the diversity of services we offer. For example, our credentials in mineral analysis led us to work with the Personal Care Products Council in an effort to help the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) shape new regulatory policies for the quality and purity of raw materials.”

“Our expertise is also responsible for our involvement with a unique passive aerosol sampler developed by David Leith and Jeff Wagner at the University of North Carolina (UNC),” stated Gary Casuccio, RJ Lee Group Vice President and Senior Scientist. “This sampler complements and in some cases can substitute for expensive, stationary sampling stations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is using this sampler in multiple air quality studies and it is also used extensively by international clients. Based on performance, cost and ease of use, I believe the demand for this sampler will continue to increase both internationally and domestically for regional air quality studies. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to see this sampler being used extensively to measure air quality in the Marcellus Shale region.”

Customer Highlights of 2010

Unbound Nanoparticle (UNP) Workplace Monitoring Study for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)

LBNL retained RJ Lee Group to design and conduct a multiphase study to help identify and manage potential health and safety hazards as well as environmental impacts related to the handling of unbound nanoparticles. A key component of the study was to define control bands for the research processes, and the outcome helped define the appropriate level of control for the potential risk, successfully mitigating the hazard.

Systems Reliability Application to Save U.S. Air Force 2.5 Billion Over 15 Years

RJ Lee Group, in conjunction with StandardAero, an independent aviation service company, developed and implemented a series of innovative software tools to access divergent engine maintenance data for a U.S. Air Force fleet. An independent study concluded that this solution will save the U.S. Air Force $2.5 billion over the next 15 years by properly allocating resources and extending the life of assets.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Awards Contract for Expert Particle Analysis System (EPAS)

The U.S. EPA awarded RJ Lee Group a contract to develop an expert particle analysis system (EPAS) to be used for automated quantitative analysis of air particulate samples in support of air pollution research, source apportionment and human exposure programs. This high-resolution computer-controlled field-emission scanning electron microscope will provide size, shape, images and elemental composition for particles ranging in size from millimeters down to nanometers.

Fly Ash Remediation Solution for Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

While working with the TVA in its fly ash remediation project, RJ Lee Group developed a microscopy-based quantitative counting method to estimate the weight percent of fly ash in environmental samples. Applying this method allowed TVA to determine that disturbing river silt to remediate the fly ash would be more disruptive than allowing it to remain in the river.

Almost 30 years ago, Dr. Richard J. Lee saw the dissolution of a major industrial R&D department as an opportunity to transform research tools into a successful commercial laboratory reaching out to industries struggling with materials issues and environmental health and safety concerns. “Laboratory services have had to keep pace with industry requirements,” said Dr. Lee. “More and more, clients are depending on an ‘Industrial Forensics’ approach to solve their problem. They are no longer satisfied with a single lab result. If a product component fails, they not only want to know what happened, but why, how and where in the process it happened and how to keep it from happening again.”

“We rely on our people to come through, we turn ideas into products and research into reality and we respond to customer needs. This has paid off,” noted Dr. Lee. “We are more diverse now than we have ever been and yet we are more allied. Our combined focus is on the future and we are making it ours.”
