(MONROEVILLE, Pennsylvania) Dr. Kristin Bunker, Senior Scientist at RJ Lee Group, Inc., has been elected president-elect of the Microanalysis Society (MAS) and will serve a three-year term (2012-2014) first as president-elect, and subsequently president and past-president. Mr. Alex Sciulli, President and COO of RJ Lee Group praised Dr. Bunker’s election and noted, “We are very proud to support Dr. Bunker in her leadership position at MAS. As a second-generation microscopist trained by the best in the industry, she will bring unique perspective and enthusiasm to the society. Her strong relationships with academic and industry partners will help build a stronger membership and camaraderie amongst scientists. We wish her all the best.” The MAS was founded more than four decades ago with a mission to advance and disseminate knowledge in the quantitative analysis of small volumes of matter down to the atomic level.

Dr. Bunker’s credentials and accomplishments in microscopy and research provide her with the qualifications necessary to confidently lead this prestigious society. Her experience, which spans the fields of material science and engineering, biotechnology, and physics, brings together the unique perspective of applied physics and materials characterization to a variety of industry sectors. Her current focus at RJ Lee Group is on nanomaterials. She has worked closely with government clients such as NIOSH, the EPA, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to develop strategies and methods to characterize nanomaterials and to evaluate their effects on environmental health and safety. She has also provided consultative services to industry clients in their mission to develop new products that incorporate nanomaterials. When asked to comment on Dr. Bunker’s election, current MAS president, Dr. John Mansfield noted, “I am happy that Kristin is President-Elect of MAS and that she will continue to serve the society in the same diligent manner that she displayed as an MAS director in recent years. We’re looking forward to working with her again on Council.”

Dr. Bunker holds both a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from North Carolina State University, an M.S. in Biotechnology from Northwestern University, and a B.S. in Physics from Miami University. She is the author or co-author of more than 40 publications, including book chapters, covering semiconductor, life science, pharmaceutical, mineralogy, and nanotechnology applications. Dr. Phillip Russell, Distinguished Professor of Physics and Science Education at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and Dr. Bunker’s graduate advisor at North Carolina State, noted that “she was a great grad student and will make a great president for the Microanalysis Society.”
