Scientists at IONICON Analytik, Austria-based partners of RJ Lee Group, have demonstrated the ability of Proton Transfer Reaction Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-TOFMS) to identify several synthetic drugs within 30 seconds of analysis.  Synthetic drugs, sometimes referred to as New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), are artificially produced chemicals that mimic the effects of illicit drugs.

PTR-TOFMS is capable of analyzing synthetic drugs within 30 seconds.

These synthetic drugs do not currently fall under government regulations, but legislation to control or halt the use of many synthetic drugs is on the horizon. PTR-TOFMS may be an ideal method to quickly screen unknown samples in areas such as emergency response, law enforcement, or even research programs.

RJ Lee Group serves as IONICON Analytik’s U.S. distributor for Trace Gas Analysis products, including Proton Transfer Reaction – Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS) systems. To learn more about the possible benefits of using PTR-MS to screen for illicit drugs, click here for IONICON Analytik’s article.
