Targeted Analysis with LC-MS/MS
Testing for the presence of PFAS in air, soil, or water to comply with current and proposed regulations is challenging because permissible limits are as low as .004 parts per trillion. That equates to trying to find 4 drops of water in over 13 billion gallons of water, or 20,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
RJ Lee Group utilizes state-of-the-art Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometer/Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) technology to analyze samples for PFAS constituents.
These are targeted methods for determining concentrations of specific PFAS compounds, such as PFOA and PFOS, though over 20 PFAS chemicals can be targeted.
A PFAS primer
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are used in a wide variety of industrial and consumer products including food packaging, cookware, fabrics, personal care products, and firefighting foams to provide resistance to water, oil, grease, and heat. PFAS are often called "forever chemicals" because PFAS do not easily break down.
Research into the health effects of PFAS exposure is ongoing, but studies indicate a possible link to health issues such as cancer, high cholesterol, liver damage, and thyroid disease. The Department of Defense is phasing out its use, the US EPA has proposed strict drinking water regulations, and several states have banned its use in consumer goods.
